When a teen fan couldn't come to their concert because she was sick, Florence + the Machine's Florence Welch and Rob Ackroyd headed over to Hospice Austin's Christopher House to give her a mini concert of her own.

Florence + the Machine is in the middle of their "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" Tour and the band was in Austin over the weekend. They took the time out from their busy schedule to regale a 15-year-old patient in Hospice Austin's Christopher House with "Dog Days Are Over" and "Shake It Out" after she was unable to attend their concert despite having tickets due to her illness.

Hospice Austin captured the touching moment where Welch and the band's teen fan were seen singing together in a room filled with the girl's friends and family. The Florence + the Machine singer even complemented the teen on their great harmony.

"The room was full; full of joy and warmth and love and life and singing. Thank you, Florence!" wrote the facility on YouTube.

What Is Hospice Care?

Hospices focus on caring and not curing. Most of the time, care is provided in homes but services can also be provided in freestanding centers, nursing homes, hospitals and other long-term care facilities. Covered under Medicaid, Medicare, HMOs, private insurance plans and other forms of managed care, hospice care is provided to patients of any illness, age, race and religion.

Facts And Figures

In 2014, up to 1.7 million patients were provided with hospice care. In the same year, about 35.5 percent of patients were discharged after being admitted for seven days. Unfortunately, that figure includes those who have died within the same period after admission. According to estimates, some 10.3 percent of patients remained under hospice care for more than 180 days.

How long a patient requires hospice care is determined by several factors, such as type of disease, access to care and referral timing. In 2014, about half of patients received hospice care for 17.4 days. Majority of patients needing hospice care are 65 years old and older. Less than a percent of the hospice population is made up of children and young adults, like Florence + the Machine's teen fan.
