Samsung already has a next-generation Galaxy J3 smartphone in tow, and the handset just received TENAA certification.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, TENAA is pretty much the Chinese equivalent of the FCC, and it's usually among the last stops before a device is ready to make its debut.

The 2016 Galaxy J3 is still fresh and it just hit AT&T and Verizon earlier in May, albeit it had already been on sale unlocked via Amazon since April. Nevertheless, its successor is already in the works and it already surfaced on TENAA in two variants.

The certification body lists the SM-J3110 variant, which will likely be the global version of the handset, along with the SM-J3119, which will presumably hit the scene as the China Telecom version.

As expected, the 2017 Samsung Galaxy J3 will still be an entry-level offering, and TENAA reveals its core specifications. The handset will feature a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, with an HD (720p) resolution for the global model and a full HD (1,080p) resolution for the China Telecom variant.

Other than the different resolutions, the rest of the specs seem to be identical for both variants. More specifically, the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) will pack a quad-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage and microSD card support for additional locker space.

The smartphone further packs an 8-megapixel main camera with 1,080p video recording capabilities, along with a 5-megapixel front shooter for selfies and video chats. Both the SM-J3110 and the SM-J3119 versions support LTE connectivity. A 2,600 mAh battery, meanwhile, will keep things up and running.

Simply put, the next Galaxy J7 will offer rather modest specifications, especially for a 2017 device, but should nonetheless fit the budget, entry-level segment quite nicely. The images on TENAA also indicate that it will sport a metal body rather than a polycarbonate casing, which will make it look and feel more premium. Overall, it may prove a good choice for first-time smartphone buyers or for those looking for a secondary device at a cheap price point.

Either way, it's still early to say when this handset will actually hit the market, but it's safe to assume that it won't launch for a while since the 2016 Galaxy J3 is still fairly new. As always, we'll keep you up to date on any new developments.
