The original Injustice: Gods Among Us sounds like the sort of game that's too good to be true. As part of a collaboration between DC Comics and Mortal Kombat creator NetherRealm Studios, Injustice centered around the heroes like Batman and the Flash fighting against an alternate-reality Superman gone mad.

It sounds bizarre, sure, but it was a great brawler — Injustice was the sort of concept that could only ever work in video games, and it was fantastic.

That was back in 2013 — ever since then, NetherRealm Studios has been developing and supporting Mortal Kombat X. There's been no word about any sort of possible follow-up to Injustice, and after three years of silence, many fans started to believe that it would never happen.

However, according to the latest rumors, Injustice may be getting ready for a comeback. French gaming website Gameblog (via GameSpot) reported that NetherRealm is indeed working on a follow-up to its DC Comics collaboration.

According to "sources close to the project," the Injustice sequel is set to launch in March 2017 — and if the new game is actually real, there's a good chance gamers may get to see it soon.

With E3 2016 set to kick off in just a few weeks, it makes sense that NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive would want to have something there. Considering that Mortal Kombat X was one of the biggest reveals of E3 2014, there's reason to believe that an Injustice sequel could also be one of the biggest stories out of this year's show.

Then again, it won't really matter if the game doesn't exist: remember, rumors like this one are rampant this time of year. While an Injustice sequel does make a lot of sense, there's no way to know if it's real until NetherRealm Studios or Warner Bros. make some sort of official statement — and if you're at all familiar with how this sort of thing goes down, you know that won't happen anytime soon.

Even so, a sequel to Injustice is a great idea — hopefully, this particular rumor turns out to be the real thing.

If the game is actually happening, expect to see more of it at E3 2016 this June.
