The Sims 4 has received an update that brings a new mode for Create A Sim that removes gender boundaries. Gamers can customize the characters without any restriction and express themselves better.

The update for The Sims 4 was announced by developer Maxis on Thursday, June 2. For the first time in the game's history, an upgrade blurs gender limitations and boundaries. This basically translates into the idea that one can dress up a character any way they please and also alter the characters' physique, voice tonality, and style of walking, among other attributes.

"The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it's really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more," notes Maxis in a blog post.

Players will have more than 700 options on hair styling, clothing and jewelry to choose from, which can be used to deck up any Sim, whether female or male. This is applicable to items from the several expansions and base game. Now, a player can attire a male Sim in a flowery dress and high heels if they so choose.

Lyndsay Pearson, lead producer of the game, revealed that the decision to eradicate the existing gender boundaries was fueled by the fact that players should have more liberty when creating a character they can relate to. The move also casts The Sims developers in a positive light.

For those worried the update will affect the main gameplay of The Sims 4, you can rest easy - it won't.

Additionally, players will now be able to designate which Sims are able to reproduce.

While the franchise has permitted same-sex romances since the original, with the marriage option being introduced in The Sims 3, the removal of gender boundaries is a big step as it allows for players to explore new gender identification territories.

The update for The Sims 4 is now available for all PC and Mac users and it's free.
