In what comes as a surprise to most gamers and gaming sites, the original Psychonauts has been released for the PS4, available for immediate download.

The confusion started when Sony earlier announced on its blog site that the game will be released on June 7, along with a full lineup of other PlayStation titles ported for the PS4.

It didn't take long before the Psychonauts title was retracted from the list with an update stating that the game is "coming out soon, but not this week." Sony apologized for the error and promised to update Psychonauts players as soon as the company was certain about its "final timing."

There was no announcement made later, however, before June 7 came around, as the Psychonauts title, to everyone's surprise, is now available for immediate download on the PlayStation Store.

No warnings and no official statement from the game company save for a tweet from one of the game developers, Tim Schafer.

Priced at around $10, Psychonauts is 2.3 GB in size and has a 5/5 rating on the PlayStation Store, based on 71 ratings. The game only allows single player gameplay and requires 4 GB for minimum save size.

On its product page, Psychonauts is described as a classic game of "psychic odyssey through the minds of misfits, monsters, and madmen." The narrative of the game follows its main protagonist, Razputin, as he trains at the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp in the hopes to join an elite group of "international psychic secret agents" called the Psychonauts.

Razputin was formerly part of a circus troupe, which he ran away from as his psychic powers manifested. He was able to read the minds of his circus mates and their evil intentions against him, thus causing the young Raz to run away.

The action begins after the disappearances of his fellow campers.

Razputin has to make use of his psychic abilities, telekinesis, levitation and mind projection "to find the loose noodles and keep them from falling into the wrong hands."

"Fight mental demons! Uncover hidden memories! Sort emotional baggage! Explore the fantastic realm of the inner mind! Join the Psychonauts!" as described on the Psychonauts page.

The game developers have also confirmed in another report that Psychonauts has widescreen support on the PS4 and will be released in Europe in the coming weeks, as the current release is only available for America.

Though, seeing as how the game just pops in and out randomly, who knows what exactly "in the coming weeks" means for Sony and Double Fine Productions — perhaps tomorrow, perhaps in a few hours or perhaps even now.
