Anime can be a very expensive hobby. Fans who actually want to support their favorite series may find that it's harder than it sounds: buying individual episodes or seasons is certainly easier than it used to be, but that doesn't mean buying anything anime-related is exactly cheap — and it only gets more expensive if the series hasn't made the jump to the U.S. just yet.

On the other hand, there are anime that span literally hundreds of episodes — shows like GATE and Erased may only span a dozen or so episodes, but what about series like One Piece or Pokemon?

For many, Dragon Ball Z was the first extended-length anime. At roughly 300 episodes, it's far from the longest anime ever ... but it's not exactly short, either. As such, finding and collecting all of the different seasons and episodes can be an absolute pain in the backside, and that's before fans have to worry about different dubs or special editions.

At the very least, it's easier to get a Dragon Ball Z collection started now that the first full season of the anime is available for free. That's right: fans can download and watch the entire first season of the series completely free of charge, courtesy of the Microsoft store.

First things first: this is the original Funimation dub, not the re-cut Dragon Ball Kai. For anyone who grew up watching the show on Toonami back in the late '90s, this is the same version — newer fans, on the other hand, may end up watching a bit more filler than they're used to.

As for the reason behind Microsoft's 100 percent discount, well ... that's anyone's guess. The Microsoft Store isn't exactly known as an anime marketplace, and most people are perfectly fine with using a service like Crunchyroll or Netflix. Then again, maybe that's the point: encourage users to try out the Microsoft Store with the first season of a classic anime for free. If that's the case, then Microsoft definitely picked a good show to start people off with!

Better yet, the only thing that users will need for downloading the free episodes is a Microsoft account (which is also free). Anyone with an Xbox Live account should already have one — but even if you don't already have an account, creating one through the Microsoft Store itself isn't all that difficult.

At the moment, there's no telling how long this promotion will last — which means it's best to get your copies today, before Microsoft starts charging for it again!

You can download the full first season of Dragon Ball Z for free over at the Microsoft Store.
