Reviews for Suicide Squad are better than those for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but not by all that much. Critics are slamming the film for a confusing story and an inconsistent tone, despite its great cast.

However, it doesn't seem like director David Ayer is letting any of the negative reviews get to him. In a post to Twitter shortly after early reviews for the movie dropped, Ayer wrote, "Prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas — Emiliano Zapata."

The quote translates to, "I'd prefer to die standing, than to live on my knees." A little dramatic, to be sure, but it seems clear that Ayer is happy to have stepped up and worked on the film rather than to have never attempted the monumental task out of fear. He followed up the tweet with another, explaining what the film means to him.

"Zapata quote is my way of saying I love the movie and believe in it," the tweet reads. "Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life."

Ayer's enthusiasm for the DC Universe film has landed him in a bit of hot water, however. At the Suicide Squad premiere, a fan in the crowd yelled out, "F--- Marvel!" — which Ayer then echoed onstage in a speech. Ayer has now apologized for the remarks on Twitter.

"Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f--- Marvel," Ayer's tweet reads. "Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers."

Ayer found an unexpected ally, too, in the form of Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada. Here's what Quesada told Marvel fans on Twitter:

It seems like the dust has, for the most part, settled for now, though some DC fans are still angry about negative Suicide Squad reception from critics. A group of upset, outspoken fans is currently petitioning to shut down movie review site Rotten Tomatoes in light of Suicide Squad's low review scores.
