Sony is expected to unveil new Xperia X Compact and Xperia XZ (or XR) smartphone powerhouses at the upcoming IFA next week, and some leaked specifications now offer a glimpse into what to expect.

As smartphones got increasingly bigger, sporting large screens and top-notch specs, many smartphone makers started releasing "mini" versions of their flagships to cater to those who wanted a smaller handset. Those "mini" versions, however, came with watered-down specs compared with their bigger siblings, but Sony did not compromise.

Sony revolutionized the "mini" smartphone market by launching "Compact" versions of its flagships without compromising specifications. The company packed powerful specs in smaller form factors and the upcoming Sony Xperia X Compact seems to be no different.

If the latest leak turns out to be accurate, the Xperia X Compact will be a powerhouse with neat specifications and a smaller screen to accommodate those who are not looking for a large handset.

Dutch site TechTastic reveals (translated) that the upcoming Sony Xperia X Compact will sport a 4.6-inch display, but makes no mention of the resolution. The report further mentions a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, but offers no details regarding the amount of RAM.

Other leaked specs include a 2,700 mAh battery, which should suffice to power up a high-resolution display if it measures just 4.6 inches, and a USB Type-C port.

Next up, TechTastic also offers some details regarding another Android smartphone from Sony, the Xperia XZ, presumably set to debut next week as well.

The Xperia XZ will purportedly pack a Snapdragon 820 processor as well, 4 GB of RAM, a high-end 23-megapixel camera with laser autofocus and two LED flashes, and a 13-megapixel front-facing shooter for video chat and selfies. The Xperia XZ will reportedly feature a larger 5.2-inch curved 2.5D glass display, but the publication offers no details on the battery unit. Just like the Xperia X Compact, the Xperia XZ should rock a USB Type-C port as well.

Both the Sony Xperia X Compact and Xperia XZ should make their formal debut on Sept. 1, as IFA 2016 kicks off. A Sony Xperia XR smartphone also leaked online recently, but it may be the same device as the Xperia XZ so it remains to be seen what it will be called in the end — XR or XZ.

With the big event is just around the corner, we'll soon get more details straight from the source. In the meantime, it's best to take this leak with a grain of salt. As always, we'll let you know as soon as it's official.
