Nintendo announces that Super Mario Maker is landing on the 3DS, giving away the big news during the Nintendo Direct on Sept. 1.

For those who don't know, it's more than just a video game, as it's also a tool to create Super Mario levels. That means players get to go through level after level of user-generated stages, sharing their concoctions and enjoying the others' too.

Unfortunately, there's no way for 3DS gamers to share their work with others on the internet. To share courses with other, they will have to connect to them via StreetPass or local wireless.

However, they can go online and download certain content from the Wii U version, though. Just to be clear on that, there will be some stages that won't be compatible with the 3DS version.

At any rate, Super Mario Maker will come with 100 courses that Nintendo designed with new challenges, tasking players with taking down every enemy or collecting every coin. What's more, it'll have the same tool set from the Wii U out of the box, but it won't have Mystery Mushrooms.

"Now Nintendo 3DS owners will have access to a near-unlimited wealth of Super Mario courses to play! Players can also create courses with nearly all the tools available in the original Wii U version," Nintendo says.

Take note that users can't search for Wii U stages using their course ID, though, and according to Nintendo, that's in "in the spirit of spontaneity."

For the uninitiated, it's also going to include interactive lessons so that no one will fall behind in creating every kind of Super Mario stage imaginable. On top of that, the 3DS version also has a unique feature that allows players to collaborate on courses locally.

Super Mario Maker for the 3DS is expected to roll out on Dec. 2 in North America and Europe.

In other related news, the game is more than just building stages, as it can also be used to make a marriage proposal. That's just one of the many creative ways that fans can do with the tool.
