Sony is set for its special Sept. 7 PlayStation event in New York, where the company is expected to officially unveil the long-rumored and highly anticipated PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Neo.
In the run-up to the official announcement, however, an interesting image has popped up online on what is said to be the PlayStation 4 Forever Edition.
According to the leaked image, the PlayStation 4 Forever Edition is the "most powerful system to date," with 4K output that will upscale current titles for the PlayStation 4. The console will also have a "baked-in PlayStation Plus," which could be assumed as a membership to the gaming service alongside the purchase of the console, and a solid-state drive out of the box.
However, perhaps the most interesting thing to note on the alleged specifications of the PlayStation 4 Forever Edition is that it will feature fully upgradeable components, specifically the console's hard drive and graphics card, though the console will only support PlayStation GPUs. Also mentioned is DDR 5 RAM, though it is unclear if that component is also upgradeable.
All that said, is the leaked image revealing that the PlayStation 4 Neo will actually be launched as the PlayStation 4 Forever Edition with fully upgradeable components, or is the image a hoax?
There are several signs that the leaked image is actually a hoax, given the fact that the words used in the image do not look like they are prepared for an important presentation such as the PlayStation event coming up for Sony. In addition, before the image, there has been no news or rumors regarding such a name for the PlayStation 4 Neo and such specs.
Users on the official PlayStation forums have also been skeptical of such a PlayStation 4 Forever Edition, citing the unclear wordings of the specs, the horrible name for the console and the image's appearance on NeoGAF, where hoaxes are rampant.
However, there is also the possibility that the PlayStation 4 Forever Edition is actually a third console in addition to the PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Neo. In addition, with Sony looking for longevity for its consoles, the fully upgradeable components mentioned for the PlayStation 4 Forever Edition could be plausible.
Fortunately, the wait for the official announcements prepared by Sony will not take too long. The event is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. ET, or 12:00 p.m. PT, with streaming to be made available through Sony's YouTube channel, the PlayStation's Twitch account and the Sony PlayStation blog.
