As Instagram's community continues to grow, the company is taking the necessary steps to assure users that it will remain a safe platform for them when it comes to abusive and offensive comments left by others.

Instagram announced on Monday that its new tool for filtering comments is now available for all users to help them automatically get rid of any mean comments on their photos and videos.

Previously rolled out first to high-profile users and businesses this past summer, the new tool prevents trolling from happening in the comment section of posts. Now, after testing the feature with an exclusive group, it will start rolling out for everyone.

"Today, we're taking the next step to ensure Instagram remains a positive place to express yourself," Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom writes in a blog post. "The first feature we're introducing is a keyword moderation tool that anyone can use. Now, when you tap the gear icon on your profile, you'll find a new Comments tool. This feature lets you list words you consider offensive or inappropriate. Comments with these words will be hidden from your posts."

Once the user taps on the gear icon, they will be able to toggle on the feature that will hide inappropriate comments from appearing in their posts. Instagram will automatically hide comments that contain words or phrases that are commonly reported as inappropriate.

The user also has the option of customizing this tool by entering in keywords they also want blocked from appearing in their comments. This allows them to filter out slurs or slang versions of offensive language.

This new comment filtering tool joins other ways to combat trolling on Instagram that include swiping to delete a comment, blocking users or reporting comments.

Instagram is also making changes to the way comments are seen. The platform's algorithm will now display the most relevant comments at the top instead of the most recent ones — much like how it now displays the types of posts seen.

The new filtering tool is available now as part of an app update for iOS and Android.

Instagram also recently announced that it will take advantage of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus' camera upgrades, revealing that it will release an update for iOS that will include a redesign of its filters for the smartphone's wide-gamut color capabilities, as well as enabling 3D Touch to add photos to Instagram Stories.
