The company would want to repeat the thundering success next year, and rumors are that its Galaxy S8 devices are already in tow, with the names "Dream" and "Dream 2," respectively.
The next generation of smartphones from the manufacturer has a high bar to match, but the upcoming Galaxy S8s also have a few issues to stay away from.
The most recent example of how not to build a smartphone comes from the company's Galaxy Note 7, which can possibly catch fire because of its flawed battery. Samsung has issued a recall order for as much as 2.5 million handsets, and the problem will undoubtedly burn a hole in the company's prestige.
However, the Galaxy S8 could be a good chance for Samsung to show it can craft excellent handsets. A number of rumors and details already surfaced about the next S generation, and now a new report hints at the model numbering and the interesting story behind it.
SamMobile reports that Samsung is building two variants of the Galaxy S8, with internal codenames Dream and Dream2, but the true intriguing detail comes from the model numbers.
Samsung is purportedly numbering the Galaxy S8 Dream and Dream2 models as SM-G950 and SMG955, respectively. Keep in mind that Galaxy S7 got the code SM-G930, while the S7 edge was coded SM-G935. This means that the company chose to make a significant leap from 3 to 5 in the numbering, and this could indicate new developments from the company.
Should the tip be based on reality, it could imply that Samsung has something else in mind between the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8. It may be that the rumored foldable phone is in tow and is coded SM-G940, or the company is stubbornly just avoiding the number 4.
The reason for this is that, in South Korea, the number 4 is thought to bring ill luck. Previous examples support this theory, as the Galaxy S III got the number GT-I9300, while its successor, Galaxy S4, went straight to GT-I9500.
Based on current info, Samsung is pushing hard to roll out Dual screens on the 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch models of the Galaxy S8. The SM-G950 might as well pack a 5.1-inch display, leaving the SM-G955 to holster the larger, 5.5-inch display.
