According to a rumor, Google is going to roll out two Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches in Q1 2017.

Code-named Angelfish and Swordfish, the two wearables are expected to complement the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, which were dubbed Sailfish and Marlin respectively.

The Smartwatches: Angelfish And Swordfish

The report comes from David Ruddock of Android Police, posting a close look at the upcoming smartwatches.

It should also be pointed out that he spread the word about the devices back in July, now corroborating it with what he calls "recreations" of the devices themselves.

Also, chiming in is the ol' reliable leakster Evan Blass of VentureBeat, who is also known as @evleaks. He took things over to Twitter, more or less supporting Ruddock's upload.

Now, the Angelfish is the larger one on the left, and it's said to be a standalone smartwatch with LTE connectivity, a heart-rate sensor and GPS capability.

Meanwhile, the Swordfish is believed to have no LTE or GPS functions, and it may not even have a heart-rate sensor too. Needless to say, it's likely to be geared toward customers on a budget or users who don't want to spend that much on a smartwatch.

Both are going to have Google Assistant under the hood, the Siri and Alexa competitor that's expected to be funnier and friendlier among the current brood.

To no one's surprise, there are no speculations regarding pricing just yet or a likely solid release date.

The Branding: Pixel, Nexus Or Google?

Assuming that the Angelfish and Swordfish smartwatches are true, the big question that remains is, what will it be called?

Of course, at this point, everyone's guess is as good as anyone else's. It could be called Nexus, but it looks like Google dropped the name for the smartphones, and it might not bring it back to the wearable side of things.

It'll possibly be Pixel since the Mountain View company's handsets are named Pixel and Pixel XL, which also had codenames with an aquatic theme.

Also, it could just be called Google if simplicity is in the firm's game plan.

Last but not least, there's a chance that Google will go with a new name, but as mentioned earlier, there's no way to find out for now.

The Bottom Line

As usual, it's advised to take this news with a grain of salt, but at any rate, any sign of upcoming Google-branded and Android Wear 2.0-powered smartwatches is a welcome sight to see.
