Google and Apple's latest 5.5-inch phablets are sure to be the most popular devices among smartphone fans. A new real world speed test video shows how the iPhone 7 Plus and Pixel XL compare in speed and performance.

Apple and Google's latest and greatest phablets are benefiting from the absence of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Apple is believed to sell 8 million additional iPhones this year, and although iPhone 7 availability continues to improve, the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus remains sold out on Apple's online store and in retail stores. It's believed that more customers are purchasing the larger iPhone 7 Plus this year than in previous years and reports claim many Galaxy Note 7 customers are exchanging the recalled phablet for Apple's.

Google is also getting a helping hand from Samsung's absence and its Pixel XL remains sold out through Google's online store and at Verizon, the Pixel and Pixel XL's exclusive carrier in the U.S. Google has heavily focused on making the Pixel and Pixel XL's rear cameras superior to rivals but just acknowledged that it will release a software update to address complaints of problems with lens flaring, which causes a halo effect to appear in images.

Many smartphone fans wonder how Apple's new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus compare to their predecessors, and video speed tests have shown how the iPhone 7 and its A10 Fusion chip compares to the A9-based iPhone 6s. Another test showed how the iPhone 7 Plus stacked up to the iPhone 6s Plus. We also got a look at how the iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE compared to Google's Pixel and Pixel XL in Geekbench benchmarks, which showed Apple's latest iPhones outperformed Google's new handsets.

Now, a new real world speed test was conducted by PhoneBuff, which pits Google's Pixel XL against Apple's iPhone 7 Plus. The Pixel XL and its quick animations start out opening system apps around a fraction of a second faster. When both devices open processor intensive apps like Photoshop Mix and Lapse It, the iPhone 7 Plus begins to take the lead.

The iPhone 7 Plus finishes the first lap in 1:24, while the Pixel XL gets through its first lap at 1:47. During the second lap, Apple's iPhone 7 Plus finishes with a time of 1:55, while the Pixel XL loses significant time by having to completely reopen some of its apps that aren't kept in memory like the iPhone 7 Plus. The Pixel XL completes its second lap at 3:05.
