Fallout 4 released back in November 2015 with the promise of mods for console, first on Xbox One and then on PlayStation 4 shortly after. Most fans assumed mods would arrive for both platforms in a matter of months.

Instead, it took six months for mods to arrive for Fallout 4 on Xbox One, and they still have yet to arrive on the PS4 version of the game due to Sony's mod restrictions. But that's at long last about to change.

'Fallout 4' PS4 Mods Finally Arriving

As announced by Bethesda, mods for the PS4 version of Fallout 4 will finally be arriving almost a year since the game's original release. Mods will come to Sony's console as part of the 1.8 update, which is currently undergoing the certification process and should be live sometime this month. The 1.8 update addresses various bugs and other issues, and went live on the PC version of the game on November 7.

The real question is whether or not anybody still cares at this point. Not only will it have taken an entire year for mods to arrive on the PS4 version of Fallout 4, but Sony's mod restrictions, the main reason it took this long for mods to arrive to begin with, are still in place.

Players won't be able to install mods that feature user-created assets, which means no new weapons, quests or environments to explore. Instead, PS4 owners will simply have to be content with mods that modify what's already in the game. Sure, there's still plenty of fun that can be had with god mode and other mods, but it's still a massive shame that Sony is unwilling to let the real creativity of modders shine through on their platform.

Will 'Fallout 4' Mods Spark New Interest?

Mods breathe new life into games, but being unable to explore new fan-created content is much less of an incentive to pick up Fallout 4 once more. Many players have already experienced nearly everything the game has to offer, and while fiddling with minor mods may be a fun distraction for a while, it won't create the kind of renewed interest in Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG that more comprehensive and creative mods can.

Those playing Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition already know how restrictive Sony's platform is when it comes to mods. There are currently more than 400 additional mods on the Xbox One version of Skyrim: Special Edition than there are for PS4, and no doubt Fallout 4 will see similar results. But, at least mods are finally arriving in some form. Except the 1.8 update to release in the next few weeks.
