In yet another manifestation of the exploding number of cord-cutters, Sony announced it is expanding its PlayStation Vue app to the Apple TV. The new functionality will allow PlayStation 4 to stream its live TV programming to the Apple's set top box.

PlayStation Vue On Apple TV

To the uninitiated, the PlayStation Vue is a streaming service that offers several live TV packages. It also includes on-demand video content as well as cloud-based DVR streaming. This last is particularly appealing to multiple device owners, as up to five linked devices can simultaneously stream content.

"You will be able to take advantage of Apple TV's Siri Remote and easy navigation with touch, while enjoying PlayStation Vue's sleek look and feel," Sony said in a blog post. "PlayStation Vue brings popular programming to Apple TV, from live sports networks like ESPN and NFL Network, to premium channels like AMC, FX, HBO, and Showtime."

PlayStation Vue bundles cost from $30 to $65 per month. Those figures are slashed to $30 and $40 in regions that are covered by live network programming.

How It Works

It is simple to use PlayStation Vue in Apple TV. Users will only need to link their subscription to the device, and they can immediately begin streaming. It is important to remember that it is still not possible to subscribe to PlayStation Vue directly on Apple TV. Consumers will have to go to its website in order to do that.

This slightly roundabout way is attributed to the fact that PlayStation Vue is not integrated into the Apple TV ecosystem. Some observers believe that this strategy is in place for Sony to avoid paying the premium Apple imposes on media providers selling content in its iOS and TVOS app stores.

The Future Vue

It is not clear yet what Sony will do once the recently announced Apple TV app rolls out. This is the new Apple solution that combines all media content from different streaming services in one location. The company is offering to slash its revenue share in the App Store if media providers will agree to be integrated into the app.

While barely 18 months has passed since it was introduced, PlayStation Vue is already emerging as one of the TV streaming leaders, competing with the likes of DISH Network's Sling TV, AT&T's DirecTV and even Netflix. Its expansive programming is complemented by its availability on the PlayStation console, Roku and Android TV.
