Final Fantasy XV was 10 years in the making, and it seems that fans of the long-running RPG franchise could not wait any longer on getting their hands on the game after it was released.

According to Square Enix, Final Fantasy XV is now the fastest-selling game in the acclaimed Final Fantasy series, a feat that shows how thirsty players were for the next installment in the franchise.

Final Fantasy XV Day One Shipments And Digital Sales

Through the official Square Enix USA account on Twitter, the company revealed that day one shipments and digital sales for Final Fantasy XV exceeded a massive 5 million units. This marks the most successful launch for any Final Fantasy game, showing that the franchise still has a huge following despite the long wait that players had to endure for Final Fantasy XV to be released.

It should be noted, however, that included in the numbers are the units that were shipped to retailers, which is why the tweet by Square Enix was worded as day one shipments. The number of actual copies purchased by customers is unknown, but the orders of retailers that contributed to the 5 million figure would have only been made depending on the demand for the game. The figure also includes digital downloads, so there is already a component that marks the units that were directly acquired by customers.

Final Fantasy XV is also the first game in the franchise that was launched simultaneously worldwide, a fact that heavily contributed to its day one sales figures.

The Massive Hype For Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV was able to reach such an impressive number of day one sales partly due to the hype that surrounded the game. The RPG has received mostly positive reviews, and while it is not perfect, many are saying that the waiting time of 10 years for the title to arrive is worth it.

Even the inclusion of a necessary day one patch, which was supposedly something that would not happen as the game's release was further delayed by two months earlier this year, did not dampen the excitement of players for Final Fantasy XV.

What's Next For Final Fantasy?

Final Fantasy brand manager Shinji Hashimoto, in an interview at the Lucca Comics & Games 2016 convention in Italy, revealed many tidbits on the future of the franchise, including requesting for gamers to be patient on the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, which is an HD remaster of Final Fantasy XII.
