Microsoft's Surface Book, the first laptop ever released by the company, has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews since it was released in October 2015.

Microsoft has recently released the Surface Book i7, a second iteration of the Surface Book that features updated processors, better battery capacity and various under-the-hood improvements. However, the Surface Book i7 is not the Surface Book 2, with rumors already swirling on the new device as users look forward to the next Microsoft laptop.

Here is what we know so far regarding the Surface Book 2.

Surface Book 2 Release Date

Earlier in the year, it was reported that Microsoft will be launching the Surface Book 2 sometime next year, with the laptop to be powered by Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors. It is believed that Microsoft is simply waiting for Intel to start rolling out the i5 and i7 Kaby Lake chipsets to include them in the Surface Book 2.

Surface Book 2 Performance And Specs

With the inclusion of the Intel Kaby Lake processors, the performance of the Surface Book 2 is expected to feature a significant improvement.

In addition to the latest chipsets, it is said that the 13.5-inch display of the Surface Book 2 will feature a screen resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, which would allow it to support 4K videos. There are also rumors that the Surface Book 2 would be able to support virtual reality systems, though there are no specific details that would lend credibility to such a claim.

Surface Book 2 Design

In August, through the official Instagram account of Surface, Microsoft hinted that company would be adding a new hinge system to the Surface Book 2.

The image that was uploaded, supposedly of the Surface Book 2, revealed a hinge that has fewer ridges compared to the hinge in the current Surface Book. The redesign could be looking to address the issue that customers had with the gap that appears when the Surface Book is closed due to the current hinge.

Surface Book 2 Potential

Microsoft has not made any official announcements regarding the Surface Book 2, but customers are already looking forward to the potential of the upcoming laptop.

The Surface Book i7, which is being sold at $1,899 for the 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage model but for only $1,848.99 on Amazon, edges out Apple's MacBook Pro 2016 in terms of pricing, battery life and screen resolution when the two laptops were compared. An updated Microsoft laptop in the form of the Surface Book 2 would only widen the gap between the device and Apple's latest MacBook.
