In its ongoing effort to compete with Apple, Samsung is about to launch a new Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone. The handset will go head to head with the Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus and will include 128 GB of internal storage and shiny Pearl Black paint job.

As Samsung was going through its Galaxy Note 7 recall, it was clear the smartphone maker needed more than just its current Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge to make up for the huge void left in its handset lineup to compete with Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Samsung saw high demand for its exclusive Blue Coral Galaxy Note 7 when the device went on sale. In late October the company was rumored to add the color option to the Galaxy S7 Edge and released the handset in November on all major U.S. carriers.

Black Is The New Black

Unlike previous iPhone launches, this year Apple added two new color options to its flagship iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The company introduced the glossy Jet Black color and Matte Black options. After preorders opened, both colors completely sold out and remained the most in demand choices among iPhone fans, and Samsung was clearly watching. By November, reports surfaced claiming that the company was planning to introduce a glossy Black Galaxy S7 in order to capitalize on the success of the Jet Black iPhone 7 models.

Pearl Black Galaxy S7 Edge With Shiny Case And More Storage

SamMobile is reporting that Samsung will launch a new glossy Pearl Black Galaxy S7 Edge on Dec. 9. Rather than launch the smartphone with its normal base storage configuration of 32 GB, the new smartphone will ship with 128 GB of internal storage out of the box and users will be able to expand that, thanks to Samsung's inclusion of a microSD slot.

Like Apple, Pearl Black is also the second black color option Samsung is offering the Galaxy S7 Edge in, it also sells a Black Onyx variant that looks very similar to the leaked press images of the unannounced Pearl Black hue that we see in the image.

Samsung will officially announce the Pearl Black Galaxy S7 Edge in its home country, South Korea, on Dec. 9, according to SamMobile's sources. It's unclear whether the company plans on eventually releasing the new color options to more markets; however, judging by the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 Edge making its way around the world, a Pearl Black variant is likely to hit more markets.

We'll keep you posted on any new details when they become available.
