Motorola's staggered release of its Android Nougat update for its Moto lineup seems to have finally caught up with the Moto Z Play. While there is no official word yet about the exact rollout, a Wi-Fi certification has revealed that a device identified only as XT1635-02 has already been flashed with the Android 7.0 version. This is widely believed to be the Z Play.

The Interoperability Certificate issued by the Wi-Fi Alliance is seen as a prerequisite for a Nougat update. It was first leaked at Twitter. It did not include any more details or specifications about the tested device save for the fact that it has been certified to support the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies.

Android 7.0 Vs. Android 7.1

Interestingly, the Moto Z Play update — if true — would be a step back from an upcoming Android update for the Moto X Play revealed several days ago in a GFXbench test. This update is already rocking the 7.1 Nougat version, prompting some quarters to speculate that the device will skip the 7.0 build altogether.

Nevertheless, it is important to note that Motorola's Android 7.0 Nougat update has already reached other devices such as the Moto G4, G4 Plus, Moto Z and Z Force smartphones. As the Moto Z Play started collecting certifications, it will probably get released in a few days or so.

Moto Z Play Hardware Specs

For the uninitiated, the Moto Z Play is currently considered one of the best mid-range devices in the market today. It has a 5.5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display and a Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor.

The Moto Z Play is also quite a looker with its premium build dominated by both metal and glass material. Additionally, the phone ships with an impressive 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB expandable storage. Although the hardware specifications will not hold a candle to the OnePlus 3, which is possibly the present king of the mid-range segment, the handset is still one of the few standouts in this niche.

The device was also released last September so it is still a fairly new product. You can also count on its 16-megapixel camera, which boasts of phase detection and laser autofocus. Other goodies include the fingerprint sensor and the 3,510 mAh battery.

If you are in the market for a decent mid-range handset that can process all your daily mobile phone requirements, then the Moto Z could be the right device for you. It currently retails from $418 to $449 at Amazon.
