Apple is reportedly planning to release a 5-inch iPhone model that sports a vertical dual camera setup due next year.

The iPhone in question will reportedly house the same specs as those found on Apple's most recent flagships, the iPhone 7, and the iPhone 7 Plus. If true, the move will mimic the release of the iPhone SE, a handset released earlier this year. While the iPhone SE sported a smaller form factor identical to the iPhone 5's design, its internals were comparable to the iPhone 6s lineup.

Vertical Dual Camera

The report is from Japanese outlet Macotakara, whose claims are culled from an unnamed Taiwanese supplier. The phone will reportedly house a vertical dual-camera setup, unlike the iPhone 7 Plus' horizontal orientation.

The new iPhone model in question is seemingly not a flagship, but rather an extension of the iPhone 7 lineup, so it's safe to assume that the phone won't come with anything drastically different.

Macotakara's report is only one of a few that purport Apple's plans of releasing a 5-inch iPhone. Back in October Nikkei tipped that Apple was planning to add a 5-inch model to its lineup, and all phones part of it would sport all-glass back panels.

Concrete details about the 5-inch dual-camera-sporting iPhone are slim, and there are no hints about the phone's potential specs, though it'll most likely have minimal cosmetic changes.

iPhone 8

Apple might be catering its full focus to the rumor-stricken iPhone 8, which according to reports will sport significant design changes that are radically different from the iPhone 7 and previous iPhone models, altogether. This is good news, considering that Apple's iPhone lineup has had very minimal cosmetic bumps.

The iPhone 8 will reportedly feature an all-glass design, support wireless charging, sport a curved OLED display, and much more.

There's also murmurs of a proprietary 10-nanometer A11 chip that's much faster and more efficient than its predecessor. TSMC is reportedly finished with the early design stages of the chip, which is headed for iPhone models due 2017.

The iPhone 8 will reportedly be released in three models, two of them 4.7 and 5.5-inch variants, alongside a lone OLED display variant, though the latter's screen size is yet to be determined. Other features pit the iPhone as likely to come with advanced biometric scanning features by virtue of facial recognition or iris scanning.
