11 last-minute Halloween costumes you already have in your closet

Halloween is almost here, so by now you hopefully have everything you need for your wicked costume. But I know there's a few of you out there who still have no idea what you should be this Halloween. Obviously, you've come to the right place.

When you're too lazy, too bored or too broke to go out and buy a Halloween costume, you should just pay a visit to the best Halloween store in town: your closet. Put a few items together and bam, you've got yourself an awesome Halloween costume that will surely turn heads, or at least start a couple conversations. Here's 11 ways you can transform the stuff you already own into very topical Halloween costumes.

1. The girl from Sia's "Chandelier" music video

All you need to look like the uber-talented young dancer Maddie Ziegler in Sia's brilliant music video is a beige tank top and briefs. You'll get bonus points for digging up a platinum blonde wig, but it's not completely necessary, although if you don't wear one, you might just look like a nudist. And if you think this costume is just for the ladies, gentlemen, I present you with exhibit A and exhibit B.

2. Snapchat logo

Instead of donning a white bedsheet so you can go as a ghost yet again this year, you should just tell people you're the Snapchat logo. It's totally different.

3. A basic person

Nothing is scarier than someone who is basic, pretty much the worst insult you can give someone these days. That makes Halloween the perfect time to terrify people with your basic apparel. For the ladies, you're going to want to wear your hair in a ponytail with a braid on the side, a circle scarf and UGG boots. For the dudes, you should put on a blue button-down shirt, flip-flops and a flat bill hat. I have chills just thinking about these costumes.

4. An emoji

There's so many emojis to choose from, but probably the easiest ones to dress like are the woman wearing a long-sleeved pink shirt and the man wearing a red T-shirt and blue plants. Now you just have to get their poses down pat.

5. Charli XCX

Charli XCX is one of the breakout music stars of 2014 after appearing on Iggy Azalea's mega-hit "Fancy" and getting on the Billboard Hot 100 for her solo single "Boom Clap," which also appeared on the soundtrack to The Fault in Our Stars film adaptation. Plus, her signature '90s style is all the rage these days anyway. All you need is a choker necklace, a black leather jacket and a mini-skirt. You should also be sure to style your hair after her wild, curly mane.

6. Any character from Twin Peaks

The world is still on a high from the news that Twin Peaks will return for a limited series on Showtime in 2016. Twin Peaks also happens to be one of the easiest TV shows from which to take your Halloween inspiration. Just put on a chunky wool sweater, and you're good to go.

7. President Obama in his tan suit

Twitter blew up when President Obama wore a tan suit at a press briefing late this summer. Yeah, it was awful. Yeah, people made fun of it. And yeah, you should totally wear that tan suit hiding in the back of your closet for Halloween this year.

8. Olaf from Frozen

A character from Frozen is the fourth most popular costume for children this year, according to the National Retail Federation's 2014 Halloween Consumer Top Costumes Survey. Though Elsa might be the obvious choice for a Halloween costume, the snowman Olaf is definitely the easiest. All you need to do is wear white from head to toe and stick a carrot on your nose. You can even just keep the carrot in your hand, if you prefer, to mimic Olaf when he's melting.

9. Tracy from How I Met Your Mother

Sadly, this year we said goodbye to CBS' long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother. But that doesn't mean you can't keep the good times rolling by paying homage to your favorite show. One of the pivotal scenes of the show is when Tracy, a.k.a. the "Mother" in How I Met Your Mother, stands outside in the rain carrying a yellow umbrella. You probably have one of those lying around, so just carry that while wearing a black dress, black heels and a beige trench coat, and you'll probably meet the man of your dreams, too.

10. Someone taking a selfie

From the Academy Awards to President Obama to basically everyone with a social media account, 2014 was undoubtedly the year of the selfie. So feel free to make fun of the ritual by being in a constant state of selfie on Halloween.
