OnePlus promised back in 2016 that the official and stable build of Android 7.0 Nougat will arrive to the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T before the year ends. But as 2017 hovered close without any word from the company, many had expected for OnePlus to leave that promise unfulfilled.

However, the company may have just beaten the announced deadline by the skin of its teeth. OnePlus cofounder Carl Pei confirmed that OxygenOS 4.0, OnePlus' custom Android skin that's carrying Nougat, would finally start rolling out on Dec. 31, 2016.

The announcement was further bolstered by official posts on the company's forums regarding the handsets' software updates. Since the rollout has just begun, many users have yet to receive the update, though it's expected to roll out more widely in the coming days.

OxygenOS 4.0

OxygenOS 4.0 finally and officially brings Nougat to OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, tagging along the usual spate of system improvements. Also included in the update is a newly designed notifications panel and settings menu, the oft-lauded multi-window view, a direct reply feature for notifications, and custom DPI support.

First Nougat Open Beta Build For OnePlus 3T

Aside from the stable software builds, OnePlus has also published the first Nougat open beta build for the OnePlus 3T, bringing the flagship up to date with the OnePlus 3, which received the same build last month.

Those who wish to receive future open beta builds may sideload the official beta build of Nougat onto their OnePlus phones ahead of the official release. But for those who don't plan to do so, it's probably best to just wait for the update, which will arrive over the air.

OnePlus 3 And 3T Specs

The OnePlus 3T is the company's more recent flagship, a none-too-drastic step up from the OnePlus 3. Its advantages over the OnePlus 3 are not too game-changing, but it does come with a 16-megapixel front-facing camera, an upgrade from the OnePlus 3's 8-megapixel front cam. Both handsets still have 16-megapixel rear shooters, though, while also rocking the same screen: a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080.

The OnePlus 3T, however, holds beefier internals, packing a 2.35 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip and an Adreno 530 GPU. The device has 6 GB of RAM, and users may opt for either 64 or 128 GB of internal storage.

OnePlus yanked the OnePlus 3 away from its store when the OnePlus 3T entered the fore, but it still may be purchased elsewhere. The OnePlus 3T, on the other hand, is readily available from OnePlus' site, retailing for $439.
