The new trailer for Syfy's upcoming 12 Monkeys TV series is here.

Inspired by the 1995 Terry Gilliam film of the same name, 12 Monkeys is about a man from the year 2043 using a dangerous form of time travel so that he can journey into the past and save the world from a deadly plague that decimates the human race in the future.

The new trailer has the same feel as the film, with mind-bending travels between the future and the past, without it being clear which is exactly which.

During a recent panel at the Syfy digital press tour, series co-executive producer Travis Fickett explained that the series is not the same as the film.

"It wouldn't be any fun for anybody if we just did the television version of that story," he said. "So we're taking all of the elements that we kind of loved, the impressions from the movie, and not the straight checklist of story items."

However, fans of the film will probably also enjoy the series. Fickett also stated that the story has "a tinge of madness and craziness," the same kind associated with the Gilliam film.

12 Monkeys stars Aaron Stanford (The Hills Have Eyes, Nikita) as time-traveler Cole, taking over the role that Bruce Willis played in the film. Cole is responsible for the future of the human race, an intense man with a large weight on his shoulders. In the trailer, he tells those in the past, "He's already dead. Everybody is already dead. You are already dead."

We learn that the post-apocalyptic future is the result of something someone by the name of Leland Frost (Zeljko Ivanek) did. But when we meet Frost in the past, he already seems nefariously informed of Cole's mission.

Amanda Schull (Center Stage, Pretty Little Liars) is Dr. Cassandra Railly, the woman who tasked Cole in the future to visit the past (although her past self is unaware).

12 Monkeys also stars Kirk Acevedo (Blue Bloods), Barbara Sukowa (Europa), Noah Bean (Morning Glory), Tom Noonan (Damages, Hell on Wheels) and Emily Hampshire (Rookie Blue).

12 Monkeys premieres on Syfy on Jan. 16, 2015 at 9 p.m. EST.
