A new user-friendly website lets users select their exact smartphone model and then gives specialized tips designed to increase battery life on that device.

Battery life is one of the most crucial elements of a smartphone's performance. No matter how high the screen resolution, how powerful and fast the processor, or how many megapixels the camera is, if the battery's dead, you can't use any of it. With increased demand for higher speed and performance along with thinner and lighter phones, smartphone makers sometimes compromise battery life. Remember, smartphones are really minicomputers; there are a tremendous number of complex processes running in the background that eat up battery juice.

The newly announced Motorola Droid Turbo made headlines recently promising 48-hour battery life, but owners of older handsets, or current ones that just don't seem to last as long as they should, have a new resource. A new interactive website designed by liGO, a Scottish electronics retailer, is hoping to make battery drain issues a thing of the past.

The website covers smartphones made by Amazon, Apple, Blackberry, HTC, Huawei, LG, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Sony. It works by first asking the user to select the manufacturer and model number from the drop-down boxes on the home page. The website lists a large number of models, old and new, for each manufacturer. For example, the Apple choices go back to the iPhone 4 and run through the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and the Samsung list covers over 20 models, all the way from the Samsung Galaxy S2 through the current Galaxy S5, along with the Note, Mini, and other variations.

Once you've selected your model, a picture of your handset then appears on the screen, surrounded by a host of various options, all of which will boost your phone's battery life. When you click on an option, the details appear on the screen's handset, instructing exactly what to do. Most often, this involves shutting off certain apps or processes that continually run in the background of your device, but are rarely needed, if ever, and only serve to use up precious battery life.

The website requires that your phone be running the most current version of the operating system for the device in order for the tips to be effective. Running an old, outdated version of an operating system in and of itself can create battery drainage issues, so before even checking the liGO website, make sure your current OS is up to date.
