Sony may soon be another name in the list of phone manufacturers making the switch to OLED, joining Samsung and Apple — whose rumored iPhone 8 will reportedly come with an OLED display.

Sony To Go OLED For Upcoming Flagship?

A new report says Sony may finally be preparing to outfit its top-tier flagships with the display technology. The company has so far exclusively used LCD panels for its smartphones, but it may soon take a liking to OLED displays come 2018 or 2019. If the report proves accurate, the aforementioned device will become the first Xperia phone to come with the display technology.

By contrast, Samsung has maintained OLED displays for its Galaxy and Note lineup for many years now, and this has been one of the hallmarks of owning Samsung's devices, except, of course, the Note 7, as many of you already know by now.

Why Is OLED Better Than LCDs?

For many years, LCD was the conventional display technology utilized by phone manufacturers on their products, the moderate but progressive market penetration of OLED displays quickly offered a far more attractive alternative. Firstly, the pixels on OLED displays produce their own light, instead of piggybacking on a single backlight housed underneath the display.

OLED displays also offer better contrast ratios, deeper blacks, and generally more vivid colors than LCDs can manage to output. Collectively, these result into a visually striking display that can punch up more detail and color accuracy than LCDs can.

Other phone manufacturers, as previously mentioned, have also taken advantage of OLED display technology for smartphones, with Huawei being an example. Its Nexus 6P, Honor Magic, and Mate 9 Pro, all come with OLED displays.

If Sony will indeed embed the next flagship Xperia with an OLED screen, it will likely walk right past Samsung for the opportunity, and instead wait for LG and JDI to ramp up OLED display production and buy its screens from those companies. Both should be able to provide enough units for 2018 or 2019. Apple, on the other hand, will most likely get its OLED displays from Sharp, according to reports.

Xperia XZ

Sony's most recent flagship is the Xperia XZ and the Xperia X Compact, with the latter being a smaller, less powerful — and in that regard, cheaper version of the former. The Xperia XZ rocks a 5.2-inch 1080p screen with a pixel density of 424 ppi.

Under the hood is a 2.15 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip, and an Adreno 530 GPU. It also boasts 3 GB of RAM and either 32 or 64 GB of internal storage.

On the back is a 23-megapixel camera that's able to record 4K video, and on the front is a 13-megapixel camera able to record 1080p video. There's also a fingerprint scanner to boot, and a 2,900 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support thanks to Qualcomm.

It remains to be seen what the next Xperia flagship could end up being, but an OLED display is a nice feature to rev up the speculation.
