Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P owners may soon get Google Assistant by way of a "major" update, and needless to say, they are in for a treat if this rumor turns out to be true.

In the smartphone side of things, the Mountain View company's virtual assistant has been exclusive to the Pixel and Pixel XL, but talks about it going beyond the two aren't anything new, as the LG G6 has already been reported to feature it.

Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P Major Update To Expand Google Assistant Devices

This news comes from Stephen Hall of 9to5Google, and according to him, he was told about this bit included in the next major update.

However, that's about it. There aren't that many details surrounding the topic just yet, but that shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering this is a rumor after all.

On an interesting note, Google recently introduced the Android 7.1.2 beta to supported Nexus and Pixel devices, putting the factory images up for download too. This is probably not the major update that comes with Assistant, though, not to mention that it's not available for the Nexus 6P just yet, but who knows.

More Devices Expected To Get Google Assistant Other Than Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P

Aside from the LG G6, the new Nvidia Shield is also set to support Google Assistant sometime in the future.

But what about the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9? Well, it's hard to say since they aren't even getting Android 7.1.2, which Google has already confirmed.

For those who can't wait to tinker with Google's virtual assistant, there are already guides (via XDA-Developers) on how to have it up and running on Android 7.0 Nougat or higher devices, but it's not exactly for the faint of heart.

Some Google Assistant Features To Look Forward To

Back in January, the beta version of the Google App contained clues to some notable features that Assistant could offer, which came to light thanks to some users who dug through the codes.

First off, it could have keyboard input and gesture support. Second, it could become capable of letting users make payments with voice commands.

To boil things down, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will likely get Google Assistant soon enough, but seeing as this is just a rumor at this point, it's better to take it with the proverbial grain of salt for now.

Also, whether or not the major update is referring to Android 7.1.2, 7.1.3, 7.2, or even 8.0 — aka Android O — is unclear. Regardless, this is still a good sign that the AI is about to start making its way to more devices other than the Pixel and Pixel XL.
