It has now been almost four years since the release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) and to call it a success would be a huge understatement. It broke every major record of sales ever by a video game following its release and the online feature for GTA V is still popular among fans.

However, now after four years, fans and gamers are beginning to wonder when the next installment in the franchise will be launched by the company. There have been a lot of speculations and rumors about the supposed GTA 6, which is reportedly in development although Rockstar Games has neither confirmed, nor refuted these claims.

The latest buzz suggests that GTA 6 could be launched in 2018 and may also see the arrival of a female lead character.

GTA 6 In 2018?

GTA San Andreas was released in 2004, followed by GTA 4 in 2008 and GTA 5 in 2013. This four to five-year gap for each installment's release hints that GTA 6 could be launched by 2018.

However, chances of this are slim mainly due to Rockstar's other much loved IP Red Dead Redemption. The studio has pegged the second game in the Red Dead franchise for release sometime in 2017. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open world game as well, which would suggest that the company may want to concentrate on this title for now and not GTA 6.

So, it is highly likely that GTA 6 may take some time to be launched and would most probably hit shelves in 2019 or 2020.

GTA 6: Rumors

There have been some speculations regarding the setting and location of the next GTA game. For a long time gamers believed that the next installment would be set in London. However, in an interview with The Guardian in 2013, Rockstar's Dan Houser stated that while London provided a great setting for the game, the studio would probably refrain from using London in the next rendition of GTA.

In an earlier report, it was stated that an alleged informer from within Rockstar Games had also claimed that the next GTA 6 could be set in Tokyo as people from the studio had visited the city a number of times and even trademarked the name GTA: Tokyo.

Female Lead?

Rumors have been rife that GTA 6 may feature a female playable lead character for the first time in the series' history.

"In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course. We just haven't found the right game for it yet, but it's one of the things that we always think about," claimed Dan Houser during an interview indicating that a female protagonist may be included.
