If reports are to be believed, Sony is looking at giving Peter Parker's Aunt May her own film as part of an expanding Spider-Man cinematic universe.

Yes, you read that right -- a movie starring Aunt May. According to Latino Review, the film would star a younger Aunt May in an "espionage story in the vein of AMC's Mad Men."

Of course, a younger Aunt May means no Spider-Man. Latino Review compares the idea for the film to that of Disney and Marvel's Agent Carter series, revolving around one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D.

This is just the latest in a long string of Spider-Man film ideas, ranging from a movie about classic Spidey villain Venom, to the Sinister Six teased at the end of Amazing Spider-Man 2. Rumors have also circulated about a Spider-Man film starring a female hero, or a film codenamed "Glass Ceiling" that will bring together a team of female Spider-Men. And then there is the rumor of Sony simply rebooting the entire franchise. Again

Hopeful rumors of Spider-Man officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a member of the Avengers have also been making their way around the net, but with so many rumors, how many of them will turn out to be true?

Either way, it seems clear Sony is struggling to find a direction for the Spider-Man franchise beyond making the inevitable Amazing Spider-Man 3. With Marvel moving full steam ahead withs its cinematic universe (recently announcing the massive phase three film line-up) and Warner Bros. attempting to mimic Marvel's success with a DC Comics film universe of their own, Sony is looking desperate to make something equally grand out of Spider-Man.
