The Tesla Model 3 is inching closer to its July production deadline and consumers are excited to lay their hands on the brand new premium vehicle from the carmaker.

However, if estimates are to be believed, most consumers who have just registered for the Model 3 may not receive it before the middle or end of 2018. Why? Due to the high number of back orders that Tesla currently has.

Even though the exact number of vehicles that have been booked by consumers have not been revealed, it is safe to assume that the figure is close to 400,000. By comparison, Tesla sold just 76,230 vehicles in 2016.

According to the proposed plan, Tesla will produce around 5000 of Model 3 vehicles per week, which suggests that it would take the company ample time to deliver it to all customers. However, it seems Elon Musk has a plan in mind, which could potentially shorten this process.

Efficient Delivery System

No one likes to be encumbered by tedious paperwork, which is usually required to be filled out prior to the delivery of a car. The CEO of Tesla has possibly come up with a procedure, which would smoothen the experience for potential customers.

Musk is looking to streamline the process of delivery and publication Electrek has shared his proposed plan, which was revealed to it by an investor. Musk's proposed efficient delivery system — shared during an investor's call that has not been made public — offers a solution to decrease the delivery time for new consumers substantially.

"The delivery of the cars is where the investment is needed. We need to deliver three or four times as many cars. But we don't want to have three or four times as many delivery centers," revealed Musk. "How do we make that delivery process more streamlined, less paperwork, less bureaucracy and get people really ahead of time with really well-produced instruction videos for how to use their car. And well, of course, the best instruction is like not having instructions. And you will actually be able to play all of the instructions needed for your car on your car."

What this means is that the company would likely send the paper work ahead of the delivery date to the consumer. These can then be filled out and submitted to the dealership, and consumers can then walk out with their brand new Model 3 vehicle. Moreover, people will get instruction videos on the car's functionalities prior to the delivery.

Musk also revealed during the investors call that he believes following this procedure would reduce delivery time from 60 minutes to just 5.

If the company manages to do what it says, then it will surely provide a much more convenient process for consumers.

Other Plans

The report also states that Musk is trying to further ease out the delivery process by planning to open additional delivery centers around the nation. These centers would supposedly only focus on the delivery functionality for the vehicles and not on their repair and maintenance.

It may be reassuring to see Tesla working on new plans to maximize its delivery and production so that the Model 3 can reach consumers timely.

The company is supposedly set to start mass production of the Model 3 from July and recent estimates indicate that around 100,000 vehicles are planned to be delivered by the end of 2017. Only time will tell if all unfolds according to these early plans.
