Home security is getting increasingly advanced, with more and more gadgets being offered every year.

So many products can often lead to confusion on what exactly to buy, which is why we've put together a guide on what home security gadgets to buy.

1. Motion Detectors

Motion detectors are a great low-cost replacement for a full-scale security system. Motion detectors can be placed throughout a property, specifically at locations such as the front door. While they won't be able to film someone who breaks in, they will be able to alert the owner of someone being there when they shouldn't be. Check out the video below to learn about different types of motion sensors.

2. Camera Systems

There are a number of great options as far as camera systems go, however a Wi-Fi-based system is considered one of the best options. These systems can store footage in the cloud so it can be accessed at any time from any place or device. These types of systems also cut down on wires and the cable equipment needed. In fact, Netgear announced a new camera system just recently.

3. Biometric Door Locks

Biometrics is becoming increasingly integrated into a number of areas of our tech life. For example, we're seeing many more smartphones use them as an unlocking mechanism. But why not use biometrics, which taps physiological characteristics such as fingerprints, retina or iris patterns, DNA or face recognition, to unlock our physical life as well as our virtual life? There are a number of biometric systems that allow users to unlock their homes with a simple touch of a button. Check out the video below to see an example of a biometric door system.

4. Alarm System

An alarm system is an important part of any home security system, especially for someone who doesn't spend much time at home. While alarms are being phased out with smarter home systems, it is likely that they will stick around for a while, especially as a lower-cost option. Check out the video below to see how to install a home alarm system.

5. Laser Tripwire

Laser tripwires are another cheap option to make sure you know if someone is trying to break into your home. What these devices basically do is emit a laser that is received on the other side of the door. If the laser is interrupted, the device can activate the alarm, or, if connected to a more sophisticated system, can send a message to the user. Check out the video below to see how to build your own low-cost laser tripwire.
