Seemingly official-looking Moto Z2 Play renders have now surfaced online, with the sequel to Moto Z2 looking pretty slick and similar to its predecessor.

Motorola is gearing up for the unveiling of the Moto Z2 Play, but by the looks of the renders, Motorola only applied some minor changes to the design. For one, it redesigned the home button to more closely mirror those on the Moto G5 and G5 Plus, but that's where things stop, apparently.

The Moto Z2 Play is as sleek and gorgeous as the Moto Z Play of yesteryear, as you can see from the leaks, complete with a gold trim and a thin profile. There's the familiar front-facing flash also seen in last year's model, along with the selfie camera.

As with the Moto Z Play, the sequel will also support Motorola's Moto Mods accessories, snap-on accessories for the Moto Z line that add different kinds of functionality. The minor design changes are unsurprising, and they make sense: any drastic changes to the body of the phone would have rendered it incompatible with Moto Mods. Keeping the design, shape, and components similar was crucial.

Unfortunately, the renders don't reveal much beyond the design, form factor, color, and Moto Mods compatibility.

Moto Z2 Play Release Date Revealed?

Motorola hasn't talked about an official release date for the Moto Z2 Play, but if the leaked image's clock is anything to go by, then the Moto Z2 Play might launch on June 8. But as always, take that with a grain of salt. By contrast, last year's Moto Z Play was announced in August and was then released the following month. June seems a little early for the Moto Z2 Play. But in the fast-paced smartphone market, who knows?

It's possible that by unveiling the phone early, Motorola can avoid sharing the spotlight with the long-anticipated iPhone 8, which might be unveiled this September. iPhone unveilings always get covered pretty heavily. Releasing a phone at the same window is almost a death wish.

Moto Z2 Play Possible Specs

Again, details are a bit slim, but you can be sure that the Moto Z2 Play will have great battery capacity, since people buy it for exactly that feature. Last year's model came with a 3,510 mAh battery, which, paired with its 1080p screen, made for a long-lasting phone.

Also included in the Moto Z Play's internals is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chip, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of onboard storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front camera. Not totally top-rank flagship specs by any measure, but again, people buy it for the battery, not the specs.

Other Motorola News

In other Motorola news, renders of the Moto Z2 Force also leaked recently, which revealed dual cameras, a huge camera bump, and the familiar Moto Mod connectors. Thankfully, it also revealed that the Moto Z2 Force will include a headphone jack and a USB Type-C port.
