According to reports, LG is gearing up to release a smaller version of its G6 flagship.

The device will feature a 5.4-inch display with a screen-to-body ratio just under 80 percent. It's also expected to tout the G6's 18:9 aspect ratio, reports add.

LG To Produce Mini G6

That's according to TechnoBuffalo, who claims to have received an internal document from a trusted source.

The move, if true, isn't surprising, and it also makes sense. LG is presumably aiming to appeal to a diverse set of consumers with the mini G6, especially to those who find the G6 as a more-than-decent smartphone but one that's too large for their taste. A petite iteration will appeal more to such individuals.

Furthermore, a new size option puts LG on par with Apple and Samsung, both of which offer their flagship devices in two sizes: Samsung with its Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus and Apple with its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Also, a mini version of the G6 is a most welcome addition, especially since it'll be the next best thing fans of LG's Friends will get. For the uninitiated, LG released an exclusive lineup of extra accessories for its previous flagship, the G5, called friends. There was a 360-degree cam, a Hi-Fi DAC, and a wireless headset, among others.

So this means that while the G6 won't have "Friends," it will have a mini sibling.

LG would most likely not release a line of accessories for the G6 akin to Friends, mostly because the company has retired from the whole modular idea. With the G6, it entered a back-to-basics headspace, and that will likely the be the mantra until its next flagship arrives.

Mini LG G6: What About The Specs?

In terms of the specs of the said mini G6, it's unclear whether LG will port the G6's specs over. Will it have the same power, capabilities, and features? Presumably. The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, for instance, offer basically the same thing, save for the screen size and the battery capacity. Hopefully LG doesn't dumb down the specs and turn it into a midrange device, although if it does so, it's poised to tap into a different market altogether.

Because LG is focusing on the G6 first and foremost, it's entirely possible that it could focus marketing the mini version of the G6 in developing countries only. In the U.S. market, it's going to champion the G6, and that's no secret. In fact, it'll pit its G6 directly with the Galaxy S8, hoping to win millennials over by selling its flagship as a "trendy phone," one that offers a "differentiated value."

LG G6

The LG G6 was released in March, retailing for an upward of $700, but prices vary depending on which carrier you buy it from. It features a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 1,440 x 2,880 and packs in a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip. Onboard is an Adreno 530 GPU, 4 GB of RAM, and either 32 or 64 GB of internal storage. On the back are dual 13-megapixel cameras, and on the front is a 5-megapixel camera for selfies.
