While AMD remains secretive about its latest GPU, people have relied on leaks to know more about the product, especially if it can compete with Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

A recent leak of possible specifications for the AMD Radeon RX Vega, however, reveals that the upcoming GPU may just be the Nvidia challenger we hoped it would be.

According to HotHardware which picked up the information from Reddit, a redditor extracted the supposed specifications of the Radeon RX Vega from a Direct Rendering Manager or DRM update that AMD submitted for Linux.

How Powerful Is The RX Vega GPU?

The leaked information shows that the RX Vega will come with an 8 GB second-generation high bandwidth memory structure or HBM2, which is structurally more compact and can achieve a higher bandwidth capacity using less power.

Not only that, RX Vega also has four shader engines each equipped with 64 GCN render output units, making up a total of 4,096 stream processors.

The GPU also has a computing power of 12.5 Teraflops — more than double that of the RX 580 which has 6.2 TFLOPS. In comparison, the NVidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti has a computing power of 11.3 TFLOPS, so that's a pretty close competition.

Leaked Specifications

AMD was very serious when it announced in its First Quarter 2017 Financial Results that the new GPU will be powerful.

"[The "Vega" GPU architecture is] designed from scratch to address the most data- and visually-intensive next-generation workloads with key architecture advancements," AMD writes.

To back It up, here is the list of the leaked specifications indicated in the update:

• 8 GB HBM2

• 2,048-bit memory interface

• 8 hardware threads

• 4,096 stream processors

• 4 shader engines

• 64 render output units

• 256 texture mapping units

• 14nm process node

• 12.5 TFLOPS / 25 (FP16) TFLOPS

There are speculations that the information listed above is actually for a higher end RX Vega GPU but, since all these are still rumors, it may be best not to jump to conclusions until AMD makes it official.

Some expect that AMD will also release mid-range Vega GPUs with slightly lower specifications, which would be a good addition to the Vega series, but there is no indication from the company at this time whether this is something it will push.

AMD has already confirmed that the Vega GPU is on track for release in the second quarter of 2017 so we may be able to expect some official news soon enough.
