Google has announced when support will end — including Android updates, security updates, and customer support — for the Nexus and Pixel devices. Google recently updated its support page to include information on when phone and online support would end for its various devices.

Phone and online support for a device will end at the same time as security updates. All of Google's devices are guaranteed to receive Android updates for a period of two years after the device becomes available and security updates for three years.

Nexus Devices

Many of the Nexus devices have already passed their expiration date as regards Android updates and customer support, but there are a few that are still receiving some sort of support from Google.

The Nexus 6P and 5X will continue to receive Android updates until September of 2017. This means that users should get Android O as it is expected to launch in August of this year, but they probably won't be getting any versions of Android beyond that. Those devices will continue to receive security updates until September of 2018.

The Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 stopped receiving the guaranteed Android updates last year and their support periods will end in October of this year.

Google Pixel

Pixel and Pixel XL owners will receive guaranteed Android updates until October of 2018. While that does give the Pixel devices a bit more time as regards Android updates, that does not necessarily mean they will receive any updates beyond Android O. Android's update history is sporadic at best. We generally see new Android updates every calendar year — occasionally more than one version a year — but there's no set release period. Android 9.0 will likely be here sometime in 2018, but that might not be before October.

Those who need the latest version of Android on their Pixel devices will be glad to know that Google is planning on releasing new versions of the Pixel this year.

Security and technical support for these devices will expire in October of 2019.

Warranties
