Facebook has announced that has reached 2 billion monthly users. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement via a post on his page earlier this morning.

800 Million Likes A Day

Facebook's growth is powered by the number of smaller communities that make up the site. Rather they be fan communities, university clubs, business pages, individuals, etc., Facebook has thrived by providing a place for businesses and individuals connect with one another.

The blog post gave us a bit more information regarding the activity on Facebook. Each day, more than 175 million people share a Love reaction and an average of 800 million people like something on Facebook. In terms of Facebook groups, more than half of all of Facebook's monthly users make use of the Group system.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Facebook's Chris Cox said that Facebook had grown to the point to where Zuckerberg and others associated with the site wanted to take steps to ensure that the site is being used to improve people's lives.

"We're getting to a size where it's worth really taking a careful look at what are all the things that we can do to make social media the most positive force for good possible," said Cox.

New Facebook Experiences

In order to celebrate this new milestone, Facebook is adding several new features to the site. The first is the Good Adds Up video which is Facebook's way of celebrating its mission of bringing the world closer together.

The second feature will send users a message thanking them whenever they create a group, react to friend's post with Love, or wishes someone a happy birthday.

The final addition will be on Facebook's Good Adds Up page which will feature stories of people making a positive impact in their communities.

Overall, none of these features are major, but they do mesh with Facebook's new mission statement of helping bring the world closer together.

World's Largest Social Network

In terms of active monthly users, Facebook is now the world's largest social network. YouTube currently has 1.5 billion, but there is less of a community focus there than on Facebook. Aside from YouTube, only Facebook's other apps, WhatsApp and Facebook Messanger, see more than a billion monthly users. Instagram has come close at 700 million and Twitter is sitting at 328 million.
