Apple, for the successor to the iPhone 7, skipped the iPhone 7s and went straight to the iPhone 8, confirming previous reports on the names of the 2017 iPhone models.

The iPhone X, the premium smartphone formerly referred to as the iPhone 8, is the undoubted star of the Sept. 12 Apple event. However, for iPhone owners who are not willing to pay a $1,000 price tag for a new device or those looking for a tamer upgrade, the iPhone 8, formerly referred to as the iPhone 7s, is the clear choice.

Here is a quick comparison between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 7.

iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7: Display and Design

In terms of display size, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus carry the same 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens, respectively, compared to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The overall design, in addition, did not change much, aside from the glass back of the iPhone 8 that replaces the aluminum back of the iPhone 7. Customers who are looking for a massive design and display upgrade should look toward the iPhone X with its near bezel-less OLED screen.

iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7: Processor

The iPhone 8 is powered by the A11 Bionic chip, which uses the 10nm manufacturing process also used for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 instead of the 16nm process used for the iPhone 7's A10 Fusion chip. By shrinking the process, Apple was able to include more transistors in a smaller space, which is expected to boost performance and battery life. According to Apple, the Bionic is 25 percent faster compared to the Fusion.

iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7: Camera

For the camera of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple has retained the 12-megapixel f/1.8 camera found in the iPhone 7 and the dual-sensor 12-megapixel camera for the iPhone 7 Plus. Apple, however, still made improvements in the form of improved pixel processing, faster autofocus, and the addition of hardware noise reduction.

iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7: Features

One of the new features that Apple introduced in its Sept. 12 event is the Portrait Lighting mode for the iPhone 8 Plus. Through it, users will be able to add "professional lighting" effects to the pictures that they take.

In addition, the iPhone 8 was given a glass back not just for design purposes but also to give it wireless charging capabilities.

iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7: Price

The iPhone 7 was released with prices of $649 for the 32 GB model, $749 for the 128 GB model, and $849 for the 256 GB model, while the iPhone 7 Plus had prices of $769 for the 32 GB model, $869 for the 128 GB model, and $969 for the 256 GB model.

In comparison, the iPhone 8 will launch with prices of $699 for the 64 GB model and $849 for the 256 GB model, while the iPhone 8 Plus will be sold for $799 for the 64 GB model and $949 for the 256 GB model.

iPhone 8 vs iPhone 7: Should You Upgrade?

The $50 increase in the base price of the iPhone 8 and a $30 increase for the iPhone 8 Plus, compared to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, are surprisingly great deals, considering double the base internal storage from 32 GB to 64 GB and the many improvements.

Some owners of the iPhone 7 might not want to upgrade right away to the iPhone 8 as soon as it launches due to the significant new features being included in the iPhone X. However, owners of older iPhone models should definitely consider the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus if the iPhone X is out of their budget.
