The FCC recently approved a new mobile phone model from HMD Global. The Nokia 9 will feature top-tier specifications, imaging, and the latest Android version.

China-based HMD Global continues to deliver quality handset models that have attracted consumers back to the nostalgic brand. So far, they have offered smartphones targeted for every tier in the market.

The affordable Nokia 3 is intended for the entry-level tier, while the Nokia 6 is aimed toward the mid-range market, with the Nokia 8 as their top-shelf model.

New Flagship Inbound

The long-rumored Nokia 9 was speculated to launch sometime in 2018, but its recent FCC filing and approval suggest otherwise. Hopeful fans of the brand expect the new model to possibly become available before the year ends.

However, it seems more likely that the handset will debut during CES 2018 and hit retailers soon after the expo.

Meanwhile, documented specifications also suggest that the new device might be positioned as the new flagship model instead of the Nokia 8

Hardware And Features

HDM Global's Nokia 9 seems prepared to take on the competition as detailed by Android Authority's report. Its screen is a 5.5-inch OLED with a QHD display resolution, which is bigger than the 5.3-inch IPS LCD of the Nokia 8.

Surprisingly, the upcoming model will supposedly use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. Analysts are unsure as to why the company opted for the older model instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845.

RAM is expected to be around 6 GB to accompany the 128 GB internal storage. Additionally, it was not stated in the documentation if Nokia will offer a smaller storage option like on the 8.

Internal battery capacity has been increased to 3,250 mAh from the 3,090 mAh of the previous model, which is expected to last even longer courtesy of its power-saving OLED touchscreen. The handset will charge through a USB Type-C port. Android 8.0 Oreo will most likely be the operating system of choice.

Imaging Capabilities

Similar to most flagship smartphones from other brands, the Nokia 9 sports a dual-sensor setup for its main camera. It will be a combination of a 12-megapixel and 13-megapixel unit. Just like past models from the company, Zeiss lens technology will presumably be intact.

Strangely enough, the company's decision to swap out the 13-megapixel front-facing shooter from the Nokia 8 for a 5-megapixel unit on the 9 is hopefully a minor deal-breaker.

Premium Design

Based on the leaked renders of the Nokia 9, the device will be mostly made out of metal with a polished finish. The fingerprint sensor appears to have been relocated to its backside just under the main camera module.

The volume controls and power button are located on the right flank of the body, while the SIM card tray is positioned on the left side toward the bottom.

HMD Global seeks to emulate the trending design of smaller bezels with the Nokia 9. Its sides barely show any borders, while the top and bottom ones have been substantially reduced, which is probably the reason why its fingerprint sensor was repositioned on the rear panel.
