Being the first to offer new technology is important for companies and that is why AT&T wants to be the pioneer of 5G service in 2018.

During a press release, the company announced that 2017 was a busy year for the wireless carrier as they worked closely with 3GPP to fast track established standards for the new wireless spectrum. The network claims that they are prepared to launch the consumer-ready service later this year.

An Overview Of 5G

Just a couple of weeks ago, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project created an industry standard that defines the requirements for a 5G wireless network. According to their definition, wireless carriers must use the 600 Hz and 700 Hz low-frequency spectrum, the 3.5 GHz mid-frequency spectrum, and 50 GHz high-frequency.

All of these wireless spectrums in combination with special technology allegedly provide improved speeds and better quality. According to experts, the key features expected from the new service will be ultra-low latency with faster speeds.

Press Release

"AT&T expects to be the first U.S. company to introduce 5G service in a dozen markets by late 2018. The promise of mobile 5G is seemingly endless and we're moving fast to make the promise a reality," the firm stated.

"5G will change the way we live, work and enjoy entertainment," commented Melissa Arnoldi, president of AT&T's Technology and Operations.

Additionally, the company stresses that the improved quality of communication and internet speeds will not only benefit regular consumers but businesses as well.

Currently, the firm has not specified what devices will use the technology and did not give out specific speeds that consumers can expect from the service.

5G Evolution

Prior to its expected launch later this year, AT&T began promoting its so-called 5G Evolution service. In fact, technology experts have confirmed that it is actually LTE Advanced, which is likewise being offered by other networks. However, compared to regular LTE connectivity speeds, the LTE Advanced does offer a better performance overall.

Furthermore, the company confirms that its plans are not limited to the launch of its 5G service later this year. It will also expand the reach of its 5G Evolution and LTE services to cover more areas.

Other Carriers

Not to be left behind, Verizon Wireless shares its roadmap for 5G connectivity that will become available in five major cities before 2018 ends. Moreover, both Sprint and T-Mobile acknowledged that their own services will catch up by 2019. AT&T has yet to announce the areas that will get the service first and final launch date.
