Drone maker DJI just introduced an updated version of its Osmo Mobile stabilizer, aptly named the Osmo Mobile 2, which brings a small roster of changes to the original and cuts its price.

The Osmo Mobile 2 is just $129, far cheaper than the original model that started at $299. For those seeking to capture smooth, jitter-free, and shake-free videos on their smartphones, this is probably the cheapest quality stabilizer available.

What's New About The DJI Osmo Mobile 2

While there a bunch of changes, the Osmo Mobile 2 isn't all that different from its predecessor. There's really just one big upgrade: the ability to record video in portrait mode. The original model required users to turn their stabilizers sideways to record in this orientation, which didn't seem very convenient. But the new model now supports mounting the phone in portrait, thus making it much more flexible to use.

Other than that, very little has changed. The Osmo Mobile 2 is made of "high performance nylon" rather than a combination of nylon and magnesium alloy, which supposedly makes it a tad bit lighter than the original model. The physical buttons have been slightly simplified, and the accessory mount has been relocated from the side to the bottom.

The new model now also uses an internal battery rather than replaceable ones, which DJI promises to last up to 15 hours on a single charge. Replaceable batteries are actually pretty handy for out-and-about filmmakers because they can easily replace it with backups once the batteries empty out. Internal batteries would require an outlet, which isn't always available when shooting in remote locations. That said, if its promised 15-hour battery life holds up, filmmakers probably wouldn't need to recharge all that often.

Plus, the Osmo Mobile 2 even charges the phone using its own battery, which is great so that the phone doesn't lose juice while recording. There's also a micro USB slot if users want to plug into battery packs or power banks.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2 Release Date

All that for just $130. The Osmo Mobile 2 would be probably the perfect smartphone stabilizer for a lot of people, and at that price it's an absolute steal. It's launching sometime next month but preorders will start as early as Jan. 23 — Apple-exclusive at first, though. DJI says the Osmo Mobile 2 supports most phones, meaning any iPhone or Android device should work.
