AMC's The Walking Dead has been renewed for a ninth season, along with writer Angela Kang stepping into a new role as executive producer of the hit zombie show.

Kang has played a major part in The Walking Dead and has written for many episodes including Judge, Jury, Executioner, (Season 2), Still (Season 4), and The Cell (Season 7). Kang also cowrote The Walking Dead finale on season four along with showrunner Scott Gimple.

The Walking Dead Gets Season 9, Names Angela Kang Executive Producer

Kang is thrilled to be stepping into her new role as executive producer, starting with the ninth season of The Walking Dead.

"Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman's amazing comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me," said Kang. "I'm excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can't wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall."

Even though The Walking Dead has seen a major decline in TV ratings, the zombie show remains one of the popular television shows on the network. For example, the premiere of The Walking Dead season eight brought in a total of 11.4 million viewers, with most fans between the ages of 18-49, giving the series a 5.0 TV rating. That means the ratings have gone down by 40 percent since season seven of The Walking Dead.

Kang Will Resurrect The Walking Dead Back From The Dead

The Walking Dead fans have been disappointed with showrunner Scott Gimple, especially with the devastating cliffhanger at the end of season eight. However, promoting Kang to executive producer of the show should help change how fans feel about the show and increase viewers for the premiere of The Walking Dead season nine.

"This is an enormously important day for the entire The Walking Dead television universe," said AMC's president Charlie Collier. "We are proud to acknowledge Angela's significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction.
