Last year, premium digital cinema camera brand RED revealed the HYDROGEN One, its first smartphone. Those who preordered will finally get their units this summer.

Jim Jannard, founder, and CEO of RED recently shared a huge amount of information concerning its first flagship smartphone. He likewise noted that the estimated shipping date for factory unlocked units will be earlier than the carrier-locked variants. However, the CEO did not specify the names of the carriers and sources suspect that all major wireless providers will offer the handset.

Wow Factor

Given a large number of smartphones available, the One needs a feature that will make it stand out from the rest. Based on the information posted by the company CEO on the forums, the industrial and rugged design makes it attractive. Its other one-of-a-kind feature is the alleged unique display technology that RED has successfully kept from public eyes.

Notable hardware components include a 4,500 mAh battery, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, Hybrid dual-SIM (option to install a second SIM or a microSD card on the extra slot), a 3.5mm audio jack, and USB Type-C

Display Description

The company CEO also confirmed that the HYDROGEN One's 5.7-inch screen will sport a 2560 x 1440 resolution. Users can switch from regular 2D mode, which is the default setting, to 4V mode. This mode allegedly projects a holographic image.

"The screen dims a bit and out pops a 'better than 3D' image... no glasses needed. There's no way to describe this. You just have to see it. So far everyone that has seen it gasps, swears or just grins. I wish we had recorded all the reactions. Priceless," said Jannard.

Design Matters

A preview video posted by Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee from the previous year gave everyone a close-up look at the design. The phone comes with a metal chassis that features textured grips on each side of the smartphone. A dedicated camera key is likewise available on the right flank, which is often neglected by other camera-centric mobile phones.

The back panel is a combination of Kevlar for antenna pass-through and metal for sturdiness. Another noticeable feature is a strip of metal contacts that look similar to ones on the Motorola Moto Z. Brownlee explains that it makes the phone modular with upcoming accessories that enhance some of its features.

Finally A Preview

So far, only a select few have laid eyes or experienced the features of the One. The company confirmed that prototypes were being distributed to content creators ahead of the launch of its HYDROGEN network. It will be an online resource for 4V content, according to the firm's CEO. Major studios and regular users can create accounts and share their work online, according to RED.

Furthermore, a preview demonstration of the phone and its technology will be available for those who preordered the HYDROGEN One sometime in April.

Those interested to purchase the smartphone can choose from the regular aluminum model that will retail for $1,195, or the premium variant made with titanium for $1,595.
