Diablo creator David Brevik unveiled It Lurks Below, a 2D side-scrolling game that combines the dungeon crawler genre with sandbox elements seen in titles such as Minecraft and Terraria.

It Lurks Below will be released through Brevik's studio, Graybeard Games. However, unlike his previous projects, the game is made only by Brevik himself.

Here's What We Know About 'It Lurks Below'

In an interview with Polygon, Brevik revealed that he is a fan of sandbox games where players are allowed to create worlds on their own, like Minecraft and Terraria. However, the developer said that he wanted something more from the genre.

"I wanted more of a point to a lot of those games," said Brevik. "I wanted to make an RPG, with classes and leveling up, random items, where you get more and more powerful as you go down into the core of the world and fight baddies."

And so, It Lurks Below was born, taking inspiration from the original Diablo and Terraria for a whole new gaming experience.

In Brevik's newest game, players will explore procedurally generated levels that are filled with monsters and items randomly. Players will also be using wands as weapons to fight against the monsters and tools such as the pickaxe to dig through the levels. Both weapons and monster will have their own stats and attributes.

It Lurks Below will also have three game modes, namely Normal Mode, an easier Creative Mode that focuses on the sandbox aspect, and the more difficult Hardcore Mode that includes permadeath. The graphics, meanwhile, are adorable, with retro pixel art portraying the game's characters, monsters, and levels.

The game has been in development for a year, but it was initially planned to be a much bigger project. However, Brevik decided to scale it down into something that he can create by himself, including its programming and music. This is also why the game's graphics is as such, as Brevik is inexperienced with game art.

It Lurks Below Release Date

Brevik is planning to launch It Lurks Below this year on Steam. Before that though, a closed beta for the game that will be limited to 200 players will be opened from Feb. 2 to Feb. 5.

Brevik is also planning to stream It Lurks Below this weekend through the Graybeard Games channel on Twitch, so players can see it in action.

After the game is released, Brevik said that he will continue working on the game on his own.
