Razer has taken the wraps off a special version of its smartphone geared toward gamers.

Called the Razer Phone: Gold Edition, it's a limited-edition offering the company is putting up for grabs to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The thing is, the only gold it's got going for it is the company's iconic three-headed snake logo.

Razer Phone: Gold Edition Is Barely Gold

Even though this Razer Phone is described as a limited gold edition, it's still primarily black. From the front, there's really no way of telling whether it's the regular model or the special version because the only difference between the two is at the back, as mentioned earlier.

That's aside from the packaging, though. The handset comes inside a red box with gold etches that are in the spirit of the Chinese holiday, including a gold letter and gold stickers of the logo.

Same Old Same Old Razer Phone

Across the board, it's still the same Razer Phone as the standard version. That means it sports the same 5.7-inch 120 Hz display with a 1,440 x 2,560 resolution and the same Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Under the hood, there's the familiar Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 that's married to 8 GB of RAM. It still boasts 64 GB of native storage and a whopping 4,000 mAh battery to keep the lights on for hours on end.

It's equipped with two 12-megapixel rear cameras, one of which is a telephoto f/2.6 lens and the other a wide f/1.75 lens, while the front side of things is manned by an 8-megapixel snapper with a f/2.0 aperture. Speaking of the front, it's got stereo speakers and dual amplifiers to guarantee loud and clear audio.

The Bottom Line

The Razer Phone: Gold Edition may come as a bit of a disappointment for those who were expecting a version clad in gold, but at the very least, it's still the only official Razer Phone that has the most gold out there.

On an interesting note, the Razer Phone is capable of turning into a laptop thanks to the company's Project Linda, which was showcased at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For those who are sold on the Razer Phone: Gold Edition, it's already available through the official U.S. Razer store, Razer Store Hong Kong, or Three (the carrier, not the number) stores in Hong Kong. Just like the regular model, it'll hold buyers back by $699.99.
