With a month to go before it finally comes out on the Xbox One and PC, Rare reveals the minimum specs required to play Sea of Thieves.

It might seem like Sea of Thieves might need high-end hardware in order to run, but sources claim that its listed requirements will allow it to work on older laptops. Keep in mind that these do not necessarily have to be gaming-ready notebooks. In fact, the game developers jokingly proclaimed that it will be fine "running on a potato."

Keeping It Available For More Users

Rare's decision to make the game playable even on its lowest setting might turn into a benefit for the game in the long run. This makes the game accessible to PC gamers that have not upgraded their systems yet for newer games that require beefier specifications.

"The game is perfectly playable at 540p, and one of the advantages of Xbox Play Anywhere is that if you own an Xbox One and a low-spec laptop you can still take full advantage of it, and we encourage it," said Ted Timmins, PC design lead for Rare.

Minimum Required To Run

Being able to run on low-end hardware does not exactly mean that Sea of Thieves is a bad-looking game. The game actually flaunts some of the best-rendered water effects in gaming. Gamers with deep pockets and high-end gear can push the visual fidelity way up as long as their rigs can handle it.

Based on the details provided by Rare, the lowest that gamers can go and still consider the game playable would be on a system with at least an Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 or Intel Iris 540. RAM should be at least 4 GB with DirectX version 11 on board. The team jokingly labeled these requirements as intended for "Cursed" visual settings. This actually still manages 30 frames-per-second with a 540p resolution.

The Highest It Could Go

It moves up in the tier after the above-mentioned specifications and ends up with the system requirements that allow the title to reach "Mythical" visual fidelity. In order to be able to tweak the game's setting to this particular option, users must have a compatible rig with an Intel Core i7-4790 at 4 GHz or an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 at 3.6 GHz. VRAM assigned should be around 8 GB with a total installed RAM of 16 GB. The system GPU can be an AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 or Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080i

Sea of Thieves takes up at least 60 GB of internal storage for its installation on a PC with Windows 10 Anniversary (build 1607). It is scheduled to launch on March 20 for the Xbox One and PC.
