Epic Games is developing a mobile version of Fortnite: Battle Royale for iOS and Android, the free-to-play mode for the ultra-popular multiplayer title. iOS users can sign up now to receive invites to an early version of the game, while Android folks will have to wait a bit longer.

The company said it'll be the same game players know on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac.

"Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates," Epic Games said in a blog post. "We believe this is the future of games. The same game on all platforms. Console quality graphics and action. Play when you want, where you want."

Fortnite For Mobile To Feature Cross-Play, But Xbox One Isn't Included

Surprisingly, the mobile version of Fortnite will even feature cross-play support, but only with PS4, PC, and Mac, with the Xbox One oddly left out, perhaps because of Epic Games's partnership with Sony. Players will also be able to continue their progress across these aforementioned platforms.

The company confirmed that players will be able to join a squad and play together with friends across different platforms. On paper, that sounds highly intriguing, but whether it'll work seamlessly remains to be seen. There's also the question of PC and console players having an advantage over mobile players because of their more dedicated control peripherals.

How To Sign Up For Early Test

iOs sign-ups open on March 12, but it remains unclear how Epic Games will select those who qualify for the test. The Android version will follow "in the next few months." Go to Fortnite's website to sign up. More invites will also be released in the coming months, so those who don't qualify the first time may get a second shot. Those who get in will be given special codes to give to friends.

Fortnite: Battle Royale for mobile requires an internet connection, obviously, and is only available on the following hardware: iPad Mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017, iPhone SE, iPhone 6S and newer models.

As mentioned, Fortnite is free on consoles and PC, but it makes money from microtransactions, which offer players different accessories and other cosmetic upgrades.
