Sega Genesis Classics is coming soon to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, offering players 50 retro games from the console that was first released 30 years ago.

The collection will look to take advantage of the retro gaming trend that has permeated the industry, which has driven devices such as the NES Classic Edition and the SNES Classic Edition by Nintendo to massive success.

'Sega Genesis Classics' Coming To PS4 And Xbox One

Sega Genesis Classics, which started off as rumors because of a tweet that was posted too early, was almost immediately confirmed by Sega. The announcement video of the collection revealed that it will be released on May 29 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The collection will include 50 games from the Sega Genesis, which was first released in Japan in 1988 and known as the Sega Mega Drive outside North America.

The games included in the Sega Genesis Classics collection are as follows:

  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

The games in the Sega Genesis Classics collection will not be direct ports, though, as they will be upgraded with modern features such as online multiplayer, graphic enhancement filters, mirror mode that will flip the games horizontally, and save states.

One surprisingly missing title in the collection, meanwhile, is Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Another thing is obviously missing, not in the list of games but rather in the supported platforms. Where is the Nintendo Switch?

Sega Genesis Still Popular

Sega Genesis Classics, however, is not the first time that Sega will release a collection of retro games from the 30-year-old console. In 2009, Sega rolled out Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The Sega Genesis remains popular to this day, with the Sega Mega Drive actually going back into production in Brazil in 2016 due to sales of 150,000 units per day. For gamers in the United States who would like to feel the real Sega Genesis controller in their hands instead of playing the titles on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the Sega Genesis Flashback by AtGames is something to consider.
