Xiaomi updates last year's Mi Mix 2 with a ceramic back design to support wireless charging, plus a Qualcomm snapdragon 845 chip for faster performance. Xiaomi cites all the design awards it received for the Mi Mix 2, so it's not much a surprise that the new iteration basically features the same design and form factor.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Improvements

Aside from wireless charging and the processor upgrade, there are other noticeable updates on the Mi Mix 2S, like the new dual camera system — 12-megapixel wide-angle and telephoto sensors — on the back.

On the front, the phone is basically unchanged from its predecessor: there's still the same gorgeous nearly bezel-less look, with the earpiece subtly located at the top edge and the selfie camera strategically — but awkwardly — placed at the bottom. This allows Xiaomi to create a phone without an iPhone X-style notch, which other manufacturers seem keen on doing.

The screen is still 5.99 inches, still LCD, still Full HD. Save for the slight chin on the bottom where the selfie camera sits, the phone basically has very minimal bezels, and the absence of a notch just means the user gets more screen real estate. The phone is available in 6 or 8 GB RAM variants, with up to 256 GB of onboard storage. The phone runs on version 9.5 of Xiaomi's MIUI skin on top of Android 8.0 Oreo. Powering everything up is a 3,400 mAh battery.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Pricing And Release Date

The Mi Mix 2S goes on sale in China next week for CNY 3,299, which is about $527 — half the price of an iPhone X.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi's cofounder, says the Mi Mix 2S is better than the iPhone X.

"We are comparing to iPhone X because people say it is the best phone. We just want to show we surpassed the best in many features."

However, like many Xiaomi phones, it won't ever make its way to the United States. The company notes, though, that the phone is for Chinese customers who travel out of the country. As such, the phone supports LTE frequencies used in many territories.

Xiaomi says it plans to officially launch its phones in the United States in the next year or so, but that's a familiar promise for those who've been keeping watch of the company for quite some time. Perhaps a future version of the Mi Mix lineup will arrive stateside one day, but time will tell.
