WARNING: Possible spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War below.

Avengers: Infinity War is breaking all sorts of records as it earns the second-best second weekend opening of any film in the country, just several million dollars behind 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Marvel's latest film earned $112.5 million from 4,474 locations during its second weekend run, topping Black Panther's $111.6 million profits in the same period. Star Wars: The Force Awakens still has the biggest second weekend opening ever at a whopping $149 million. These, along with Jurassic World and the original Avengers film, are by far the only films to push past $100 million during their sophomore run, at least in the United States.

Avengers: Infinity War Is Raking In Crazy Money

In North America alone, Infinity War has made $450.8 million so far. It's the fastest film to make a billion dollars, taking just 11 days. Notably, the film hasn't even opened in China yet, a lucrative market for U.S. releases. At this rate, people are speculating whether the film can surpass the $2 billion mark.

Infinity War is by far the most controversial and shocking Avengers entry to date, leaving audiences with four major questions about the fate of the franchise after that unexpected ending, which apparently Mark Ruffalo spoiled months before the film premiered.

Avengers: Infinity War Reviews

The film has garnered an 84 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics praising its ability to craft a great story despite the scope, and others thinking its overpopulation ultimately bogs down the narrative.

"Some of the sequences are undeniably thrilling but, at about 2-1/2 hours, overkill sets in early," one critic said.

Another reviewer was more pessimistic of the film, but for its potential implications instead of its content:

"The Avengers: Infinity War isn't just a gussied-up mediocrity being widely mistaken for a good movie. It's also, at least arguably, a dangerous movie for anyone who cares about the future of American cinema."

Globally, Infinity War has grossed over $1.2 billion, and upcoming China screenings will likely cause that number to balloon significantly. The highest-grossing Marvel film in that country is Avengers: Age of Ultron, earning CNY 1.464 billion — about $230 million.

More than anything, response for the film has been overwhelmingly positive, especially after its jaw-dropping ending that makes the future of our superheroes unclear.
