Google has finally released a software update for Motorola Nexus 6, which brings the device to Android 7.1.1 version.

Early last year, Google released the Android Nougat 7.1.1 update for the aging Motorola Nexus 6. However, several users started complaining about issues such as not being able to use Android Pay after installing the update.

Therefore, Google panicked and immediately rolled out an update that downgraded the phone back to Android 7.0. At the time, users who stayed on the original Android 7.1.1 build for the Nexus 6 were warned that they will have to revert to the original update track in order to receive future software updates.

Then in August, another over-the-air update was released for the device, however, it turned out to be a failure. Apparently, an issue prevented some Nexus 6 users from updating their phones.

Android 7.1.1 Update Finally Released For Motorola Nexus 6 Users

Now, three and a half years after its debut, Motorola Nexus 6 users are finally getting the Android 7.1.1 Nougat software update. According to reports, Google rolled out the software update last week, with a size ranging between 344 MB and 911 MB.

To recall, the Android 7.1.1 update brought in a host of cool features such as app shortcuts, support for circular app icons, revamped notifications, keyboard image insertion, GIF support, new emojis, a brand-new camera app, and more.

However, the new update does not introduce any other notable changes to Nexus 6 devices apart from a new N8I11F build and baseband from 45R to 51R.

It is worth mentioning that Google has already listed the factory and OTA images online, so if users have not yet managed to update their Motorola Nexus 6 devices, they can do so manually by downloading the images.

It is still unknown why Google has suddenly rolled out the update. The only logical explanation, however, is that it serves as a bug fix for the debacle that left several Nexus 6 owners using T-Mobile get stuck with the Android 7.0 build.

The Nexus 6 will not be getting any software updates or security patches beyond Android 7.1.1, so it's probably not the best idea to purchase a Nexus 6 anymore.

However, if there are people who are still using the Nexus 6, it's good to see Google has fulfilled its commitment to support the device with three years of security patches by finally delivering the October 2017 security patch to everyone.
